A Practical Calendar for Leadership Teams Heading Into November

Midterm years compress attention in Washington and expand it in corporate government-affairs shops. That is unavoidable. Letting it freeze hiring, pricing, and product launches is optional — and usually costly. Customers do not pause their own demand because a chamber is in session.

Separate reversible bets from irreversible ones. A warehouse lease is hard to unwind. A media flight and a contractor bench are not. Fund the first only against contracted demand. Fund the second against the plan you would run in a normal year.

An operating calendar

September to October: lock 2027 pricing architecture and dual-source the five inputs most exposed to trade rules. November to December: review the actual post-election composition and only then reopen the irreversible list. January: ship the plan. Companies that wait until January to think will spend Q1 explaining why they are late.

Keep employee communications factual. Staff can see headlines. They need to hear that payroll, safety, and customer commitments are not campaign props. Silence creates rumors. A short monthly note from the operator creates stability.

The firms that emerge from an election year stronger are the ones that treated politics as weather and execution as climate. Weather passes. Climate is the system you built when no one was watching.
