The United States is gearing up for its massive 250th anniversary, and the marketing machine is working overtime to sell a glossy story of liberty and justice for all. But if you look past the fireworks and the patriotic speeches, the economic reality is offensive. The latest study from the Institute for Women's Policy Research drops a heavy anchor on the festivities: American women are still trapped at earning 82 cents for every dollar a man makes—a gap that turns into a canyon for women of color.
Let's stop pretending this pay gap is an accident or a "negotiation issue." It is a deliberate structural calculation that saves corporate America billions every year. From advanced logistics to commercial real estate, the executive suites are heavily gatekept, ensuring that the wealth generated by this country stays in very specific hands.
The current economic squeeze has made things significantly worse. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the total collapse of affordable regional childcare infrastructure has forced millions of mid-career women out of the full-time workforce since the pandemic. We are celebrating "freedom" while working mothers are being priced out of their livelihoods.
As the nation marks its semiquincentennial, we need to throw out the historical nostalgia. True independence isn't a piece of paper from 1776; it’s financial parity, and right now, America is defaulting on its debt to women.
